Drawing program week 2
How do I understand the rationale for the drawing program? I understand the drawing program rationale as a way of describing how we would learn to embrace different ways in which to “draw” and explore different skill sets that we could they utilise later in the other programs. Similarly it suggests that we will have preconceived notions about drawing challenged. Something which is altered later in the presentation with the suggestion that painting a building is still considered drawing. (Julie Cockburn) What do you feel about drawing? I love drawing. It is my favourite hobby to do when I am not particularly busy. Practising both traditional and digital mediums I am always looking at different ways to improve my skills and new things to draw. I prefer the drawing of characters and creatures to environments and landscapes. However I’m always willing to try new things. I find it much more rewarding to draw than to create 3D maquettes or to cut and stick in collages as I do not really enjoy those messy processes. However I do appreciate the value of maquettes and will make them when I need to. It can often help in the 3D drawing of an object. Which is something which we did this week in the mark making on paper to create a 3D object. Something I did not enjoy and was not good at. Although I did it regardless. Similarly we practised perspective drawings. I found this very interesting and difficult. It was difficult to get my head around the lines and the distances between objects however I feel the final product was good for a first attempt. I’ll need to practise more in the future. How have you made use of your studio time? I have been present to all scheduled studio time and gave it my best at every task we have been presented with. The drawing program mini project was something I tried hard in, staying in a bit during breaks in order to create these silly little fish characters that I could put into a world of their own. Similarly I have made use of the items available for me to use within the studio with tools and computers for printing etc. Macs are hard to use however with practise I think I can get used to them. They are not something I have ever really used. Which skills introduced last week have been useful this week? Learning not to worry about the final outcome but to concentrate on the here and now and the development of the piece. Rather than the thing at the end. Likewise the way in which we present/ what we present, as in a level we were told only to present your best work. However during these weeks we have been told to display the whole process no matter if it works or not as it is a good learning experience. To annotate and figure out what didn’t work so we can improve on it and not do the same thing next time. Otherwise during the induction week not many “skills” were introduced. Unless we are talking about the online safety skills we were taught through two power points/ graphic presentations. Which is something we have all been learning since year 5 and so found it less than useful in the grand scheme of things. How have the artist references you found helped you think about new approaches in your work? Julie Cockburn, as mentioned earlier, was shown to us to subvert our expectations about what is considered drawing, this means it has opened my eyes as to what ways work can be presented and created and how it will be perceived differently. And allows me to consider new ways in which to create work and to try new things! How have the practical and material elements of the work gone? The maquette made of paper to practise mark making went badly. I kept a few notes in my diary, but perhaps I should have taken more considering we did not do a huge amount of book work for large majorities of the project as we were working on paper. Meaning I did not annotate as much as I normally would, which annoys me slightly. Otherwise it was quite nice working on sheets to do large sketching. I enjoyed the parts of the project where we were allowed to go around camp to begin drawing things which looked like they would be interesting to draw. Giving us a lot of creative freedom and allowing us to either pick something we we good at or to challenge us. I chose a few perspective shots of mannequins on the campus to practise a little bit. I very much enjoyed the mini drawing project where we were told to find 3 things and get resources for them. E.g. Texture, object and character. And begin creating a project based purely on those things. I ended up doing a more practical process with collage mixed with illustration, which is something I would not normally do due to really disliking collage. However this was surprisingly nice to do. I also did not end up with much of a final product but more of a final idea, which I could continue with in the future if I so desired. What could I do better next week? More artist research. I did none written down as there really wasn’t much necessary for the small projects that we did. I only really had the artists suggested to us through the presentations presenting this project. If you had a tutorial how can that be used to reflect on your progress? During my tutorial this week I was told I was up to date with all activities and so had no necessary extra work to do. We ended up talking about how I’m settling in and future plans. So the talking ahead to future plans allows me to reflect on my work as I can use it to try and see how it correlates.
