Design week 6 Write the similarities between the process between the first and second project.- Mind mapping and brain storming with thumb nailing ideas to be able to idea generate and refine. In my personal progress it was the fact I started down one route, and then changed part way through the project to make something more interesting or efficient. Both changed after I mind mapped more ideas or went back to previously annotated thumb nails, and so I’d say is a similarity. If you had a tutorial this week how will you use it to reflect? It helped me realise the work I need to get done. Similarly work that needs to take place such as the finalisation and creation of my blog for the next project. I will use it to reflect on my work and what needs to be improved, and to look forward to the next project and ensure that any work that needs to be printed out should be done sooner rather than later. Identify the overlapping themes, particularly in my independently lead work. Are there connections between the work, ideas, attitudes. That you have used in both projects. If so what is it? If not what are the differences? My attitude tended to remain quite against practical maquette making. Until I did it and found it quite helpful during this second project. Similarly my thumb nailing and ideas generation techniques have remained consistent. Another consistent theme is that I tend to try and create one final thing and the end which can be observed during critique and easily explained. Rather than just coming up with the ideas and leaving them in the sketchbook, which we have been told we are able to do and continue at a later date. I tend to give the project as much of a go as I can even if I’m not keen on it as they all have been a learning experience for me. This design project has taken me out of my comfort zone slightly in that I am not used to almost schematic drawing and much contextual product drawing. However that is what I did for my final project board. Compare how you have used your time between each project. Consider how you have managed them. Planning and organisation: I feel I have been worse than the week previously. Many things were not printed out by the final day of the two weeks and I feel as if I made the maquettes a little to late during the development of my ideas. So next project, I will manage my time better and allocate more time for organising what I need for each session. However in the media project that will be quite simple and I will likely not need to do much printing out as it is mostly a Digital media and I can post a lot of images onto my blog, which after my tutorial I finished up in preparation for the media project. With help from a few peers for the technical issues. Being open to changes in direction: in both design and fine art I was open to idea changes and concepts and in fact had idea changes part way through both projects due to conversations and general thinking over my ideas. If I am told I need to reconsider something I will do it. As it is always good to get a second opinion on things to create a better project over all. Also it was nice to get tutor input if ther was something in the brief which I did not quite understand. Something I will keep in mind moving into the next week. Different materials possibilities: during the art project I did print and drawing then digital drawing. During design I did plastersine and drawings and likely would have done a cardboard model if time had permitted. I am open to many different material possibilities to try new things. I feel like I spent much less time working with materials this project that previously but that was likely due to the nature of what I was creating. There wasn’t much need to do prints etc when designing a piece of technology. Creating complex or unexpected outcomes: I found this Is something which hindered this project for me as I managed to over complicate things. My initial ideas were fun and quirky and could have lead to fun artist researches and presentation techniques. However I over thought it and ended up dismissing the idea as I felt it was not interesting enough or not gradable, rather than going for it and doing something interesting. So I suppose in some ways the outcome was unexpected for me as I was initially going to do something entirely different. Although this did mean less development time for what was my final thing. And may have taken away from what I could have achieved as a presentation at the end. Developing and understanding of artists working in the same area: we were asked to research a designer before we were really given our project task. This meant the designer I researched was entirely unrelated to the project I ended up creating. As the artist wasn’t really working in the same area. However during research on presentation techniques it allowed me to see consistencies in how their work is presented, no matter what they are developing. Allowing me to work in a similar way and develop and understanding of products within the world of design. Understanding different approaches of practise in different areas: I got to research how a few companies pitch their ideas which lead to me creating a product board. This was a good use of my time for the presentation at the end of the project. Presenting ideas: I found this a quite easy task as the product board I created was precise and showed exactly what I wanted to communicate and so was a really good visual aid for me to present my ideas efficiently.
