Animation Drawing:
During this workshop day we practised with the idea of animating using charcoal and rubber lines much like the animator William Kentridge.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Od3JRHUlo08
we were shown this video of his process.
I found his technique to be very inspiring. I love the way that the lines dance around the page and the shadowy figures that he achieves when rubbing out features. Leaving imprints as his creations move across the page. I also love the sense of depth that can be achieved using the contrasting dark to light of the charcoal.
Also after this workshop I have a massive amount of respect for his process. To create a figure that moves you have to photograph every line and rubbing that you do in small motions to give the illusion that the image is slowly forming and disappearing into the page. If you create to long or large a movement it will just suddenly appear between frames, and look very incorrect.
Within this 3 hour workshop. Me and my group, Beth and lillian. Managed to create a charcoal animation where a face forms and changes with each stroke. With us swapping who was drawing and the model in which each of us was drawing. Having 20 minutes each to sketch the figure.
The final product of our group activity.
