The brief: Did you read and make use of the project brief? Yes I made use of the brief. I used to to ensure I knew what I was doing every sessions and to find out what the independent study tasks where when we were not in class. Similarly I used to when I was off I’ll to make sure I didn’t fall too far behind and keep up with the work as I missed the in uni session. How closely did you follow the brief? I followed the brief closely as that is what we were asked to do. We were asked every session by various tutors to keep referring back to the project brief and so that is what I did. However once I read it over once or twice I would then mostly go at it from memory and so I suppose in that way I wouldn’t have followed the brief as closely as I could have. Did you deviate and if so what were the reasons? Not really. It was easier to follow the brief to ensure we understood the task than to deviate and become lost on what tasks we were meant to do. Is the work any good, and how might you improve it? I feel like elements of my work are good. The ideas development and the thumb nailing were good steps for getting an idea together. However elements such as the maquette I made. Could have been better. Similarly I could have made a more permanent maquette so that I could present it. Instead I did a plasticine model which got quickly destroyed after photos by being squashed. Similarly I feel like some of the sketches I did for the final design were not quite correct in their dimension and so do not look like proper design proposals. If I were to do that part of the project again I would get actual dimensions of the ear to make the final drawing scaled in a way that It could be feasibly inserted onto an ear. Making it look like a proper design proposal. I need to improve on technical drawings. Drawing a 3 dimensional object rather than a character or person was a personal challenge for me, and so I feel further practise might be necessary. Did you encounter any problems or make mistakes and how did you manage these? Of course there were mistakes in the creation of the final project. Some of the designs were impractical and so it just lead to me to keep redesigning. Similarly there were a few mistakes in the resources I gathered. They were just not that relevant to what I was doing or the fact that I changed my idea from my initial thoughts of doing a poster, to deciding on a medical device. Which lead some of my previous secondary research inert. How effectively does your proposal/presentation communicate your design ideas? My product board is clearly annotated and diagramed to show what I would intend to propose to a medical board. The annotations and diagrams show various features and designs of the product and so would be used to effectively communicate to my audience what the device does. However I probably could have done with having a few more diagrams than I did to properly emulate a design Board. As these tend to have many diagrams of every angle and showing internal mechanisms and such. The design process: To what extent did you follow the suggested process? I followed it pretty closely as that is what was suggest on the brief and it is an effective way to ensure you have everything down, and to have an effective product at the end. However I guess I did deviate slightly as some part didn’t make particular sense to me being an outsider to the designer process. However I did enjoying this way of thinking much more than the art project. How effective was the process in delivering/creating innovative solutions? It was decent in coming up with good ideas. However I feel I over thought the task and so ended up changing my ideas thinking what I came up with wasn’t acceptable. Although later being told it would have been fine,Which was unfortunate. However I feel I made good use of time in the recreation of my idea. Leaving Enough time to redo my research and create an effective final piece. What were your strengths and weaknesses in relation to the process? Strengths, coming up with fun ideas and potential developments that could have been interesting to pursue. Weakness, finalising that idea and deciding which one I wanted to go for. I could have started much earlier in my maquette creation and so would have lead me to better refine my project before the final product design board creations. Would have left me with more time to create a really considered idea. With more problems solved especially in the technical drawing side. Specifically what will you do different on the next project? Not have any days off even if I feel rubbish. It is very hard to catch up using the brief alone. Go back to doing more artist research. In the art project I had lots of artist research in my book to help me push my project forward. However in this one I did very little which lead me to get stuck on design snags along the way. The bigger picture: What have you learnt about yourself? That I still enjoy the design process. Being told roughly what your final outcome will need to be suits me much better than the open and broad options of the art element. How has the experienced risen even informed your thinking regarding future studies and progression? I know now that I am more between the design media aspects than I am between design fine art like I thought I was. Makes me interested in starting the media project and seeing how that goes. How well does the evidence, which you have produced, met the assessment criteria? I still need to go back and stick in a few parts that I have not printed yet. And fully annotate around those aspects. How does the work contribute to your portfolio? It shows research skills. And drawing skills. Otherwise it doesn’t suit what I need?
